Traditionally strong, Accies have been bolstered this season by some New Zealand imports so it was a tough ask for Burgh to come away with anything. From the off it was Accies who pressured Burgh forcing the scrum half back towards his own line, forcing the turnover and scoring in the middle. The conversion followed and in short order it was Accies 7 Burgh 0.
Almost immediately Accies attacked again and their impressive full back made a gliding run to score in the corner.12-0. Burgh did not have the defensive shape or the finishing expertise of the home side but they continued to show glimpses of what could be. Strong driving in the loose contrasted with an unusually ineffective scrum. Rescued time and again by good clearance kicks from Sterry Burgh were forced by the attack minded Accies to a scramble defence often exposed out wide. Even the magic hands of Cairns could not unlock the Accies defence.
From yet another Accies attack the ball went through the hands only to be passed forward yards short. From turnover ball they attacked again wide left only for the try to be disallowed for another forward pass.
Accies pressure led to Burgh conceding penalties in midfield, slotted by the accurate Accies kicker 15-0. From yet another attack Accies kicked high and what looked like a knock on was deemed to have come off a Burgh hand. The bounce favoured the pursuing Accies who gathered and touched down. 22-0. Try converted to bring the half time score to 29-0.
The half time team talk energised Burgh and they seemed to be gaining ground. A speculative kick through by Burgh was gathered deep in the 22 by Voigt covering back. His good effort came to naught as his enthusiastic offload bypassed the support player gifting the Accie who charged through for an easy try. 29-0. This seemed to inspire the home team who began to gain the upper hand, attacking again and scoring on the left wing. 34-0. Accies then followed with a kickable penalty 37-0.
Despite Burgh hanging on for large parts of the second half Accies still looked dangerous. A break out against the run of play saw Sterry scamper the length of the pitch to score under the posts. The whippet like Sterry then slotted the conversion 37-7. Could this be the turning point? Unfortunately not. A slip in midfield due to the showery weather lefty a gap through which Accies sprinted to score again. 42-7. As a final flourish Accies attacked down the left hand side, setting the ball up and releasing it right to score in the right hand corner. The final conversion was good taking the score to 49-7. A deserved win for Accies and a disappointment for the depleted Burgh side. The Picture House man of the match was David Sterry for his excellent kicking from hand and his opportunist try.
