The Nineties

After a quiet start to the decade, Burgh’s fortunes took a leap forward thanks to a number of stars aligning…
Major investment and hard graft created the 1st XV pitch (which had lain fallow for decades but which is still the envy of many a club), and that enabled a better style of play. The same dedication and pursuit of excellence would go on to renovate and extend the clubhouse in the late 1990s.
A once-in-a-generation bunch of youngsters – all Burgh born-and-bred and nurtured through the club’s youth system – emerged over a few years into the senior level – and crucially stayed with the club for the bulk of their careers!
And tack-sharp governance and focus off the pitch from various hard-working volunteers all drove the club forward like never before. And how it paid off…
Five successive promotions saw Burgh up into National League division four by 1999, with a strong 2nd XV also winning several successive promotions in the Reserve Leagues, and an occasional 3rd XV, more commonly known as The Grousebeaters, blazing a trail for the Burgh at home and abroad on some memorable tours.
